Quick capture (jot a note from any app)

Describes monthlet 1.2.0.

Press a shortcut in any app to open a small window in the middle of the screen and save a thought to monthlet right away. The main monthlet window does not come to the front.

  • Open: the default shortcut is Control+Shift+Space. Press it again to close.
  • Save: ⌘↩ on macOS, Ctrl+Enter on Windows. The window closes and you are back where you were. Esc closes it too; what you typed stays, so you can continue next time.
  • Images: paste an image into the window or drag one in.
  • Where it goes: by default a new note (in the top folder of the vault, titled with the first line). In Settings > General > Quick capture you can switch to "End of today's daily note (with the time)". If daily notes are off, no folder is set, or the daily note has unsaved edits in the app, it saves a new note instead and tells you in the window.
  • It saves to the vault that is open in monthlet. monthlet needs to be running.
  • Change the shortcut: in Settings > General > Quick capture, type one like Control+Shift+Space and press Change. If another app uses it, it can't be registered and you'll see that right away. You can also turn the shortcut off.
  • Tidy with AI: in Settings > General > Quick capture, set "Tidy up" to "Tidy with AI right away" and the AI turns each memo into a short note with a title when you save (it keeps everything and adds nothing, in the same language). The default is "Save the memo, tidy later". It uses the provider and model chosen in Settings → AI, and usage is charged. If the AI is unavailable or cannot tidy, the memo is saved as is and the window tells you.
  • When monthlet is closed: in Settings > General > Quick capture, turn on "Start in the background at login" to start without a window when you log in, so the shortcut works right away (macOS). On Windows, turn on monthlet in Windows Settings → Apps → Startup. On Windows, "Keep running when the window is closed" keeps the shortcut working after you close the main window; open or quit from the icon in the notification area. Both are off by default. If the vault can’t be opened yet right after you sign in (for example, before OneDrive is ready), monthlet keeps retrying for a while and switches over automatically once it opens.

monthlet is free on macOS and Windows.
